Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center
U.S. News & World Reports has ranked Penn Medicine hospitals among the best in the country for treatment of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases, and patients of Penn Presbyterian can further benefit from the hospital’s affiliations with cancer-specific laboratories and centers. Penn Presbyterian patients may undergo treatment at the Abramson Cancer Center, a research and treatment facility dedicated to eradicating cancer, or the Penn Lung Center, a multidisciplinary center that brings together experts from across the university’s many departments.
Penn Medicine is also home to a program specifically dedicated to mesothelioma: the Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program. The program takes a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, bringing together internationally recognized doctors, surgeons and others who work together to diagnose and treat patients. This means that treatment comes in many forms: from nurses specifically trained in the treatment of mesothelioma; from registered dieticians who provide nutritional counseling; from cancer counselors to assist with needs that arise with the patient and the family; and even from experts like speech/swallow specialists, who can aid in any issues that arise throughout the course of cancer treatment. Penn Medicine has also hosted medical conferences for patients and families with presentations by some of the best mesothelioma experts in the country.
Patients may have the opportunity to take part in a clinical trial at a Penn Medicine facility. In fact, Penn has received a National Cancer Institute grant to test a new treatment for mesothelioma that was developed in one of the university’s labs.
Penn Presbyterian also puts a strong emphasis on patient comfort. Most rooms in the hospital are private and patient care teams understand the need to communicate and be attentive to patient and family needs.
